How dangerous is a air quality alert?

i have a toddler and i was just wondering how dangerous is it to take her to walmart and my bros house with an air quality alert? shes only gonna be outside to get in and out of the car and then we will be in a store or my brothers house. Is it still really bad if shes not hanging outside?
