Why do people that wear chaps and biker jackets get called gay pirates?

I see here many people that ride cruisers and wear chaps and black leather jackets are called gay pirates.I have quite a few freinds that ride cruisers besides Harley's that wear them too.Are they gay pirates too or just the Harley riders?Chaps provide good protection against the elements and can help prevent road rash if you go down on pavement.Plus they are handy to be able to remove when you get to your destination.Cowboys have worn chaps for many years.Would you say they are gay too?As for the jacket what should we wear?Should we all get full racing leathers so we can act like we're Valentino Rossi?I'm just curious where this stereotype came from?I don't really give a s*** what any one really thinks about what i wear but i am curious about the reasons why it's said.BTW i've been wearing chaps and a leather riding jacket for riding apparel for about 35 years.I have yet to have anyone not hiding behind a computer dare call me a gay pirate.So let's hear your opinions.
