When is a child old enough (in your opinion) to sleep on the top bunk of a bunk bed?

Is there a side rail? My oldest (8) sleeps in a bunk bed by himself in his own room, but just prefers the top bunk. It has a rail on the side so I've never worried about him falling. He's slept in this bed since he was 5.
